A common question I’ve been getting when people hear I’m going to have two under two is what kind of double stroller I’m getting. And I will admit I did spend a fair amount of time fretting over the fact that the very nice stroller we currently own was not one that could convert into a double. Which meant we’ve been left with the decision of how we’re going to transport our two littles as easily as possible. So I started researching my options. And whew! There are tons of options. And where did we land? On a wagon. Not even a stroller at all! So why did we go this route?
Longer Lasting
When I thought of our long term needs for a double stroller, the wagon seemed more multipurpose. Each seat can hold up to 55lb (in the one we chose) so we know we can get a lot of life out of the stroller aspect. But even past that, we can continue to use it for just one kiddo or to haul kid gear when we’re at the beach or the soccer field. Because of the all-terrain wheels and ability to both push OR pull it, it’s suitable for all kinds of environments too!
We Have Other Options Early On
So one of my hesitancies with the wagon over a double stroller was wagons aren’t typically designed for newborn use. Some do come with car seat attachments which is great! But a lot of them aren’t going to be suitable until at least 6 months (or when your kiddo can sit independently) and even then maybe a little trickier for them than the stroller. BUT once I thought it through I decided we had other options in the meantime. As I mentioned we have a great single stroller. So when baby is extra little, I can baby wear while my toddler rides in the stroller. Once the baby is ready to ride, my toddler will most likely be more eager to walk when we hit the neighborhood or ride his tricycle.
Fits Our Lifestyle
There are definitely some location or lifestyle characteristics that could make a wagon impractical for some families. While both strollers and wagons are large, the wagons do tend to be bulkier and heavier. So if you live in a crowded city or take public transportation a lot, the wagons may be a bit trickier to maneuver. We live in the suburbs where I pretty much drive everywhere I need to go with my wagon, besides walks around our own neighborhood. Additionally we have a large car so the bulkier aspect won’t be a hindrance. And, we like to go to the aquarium and zoo, the park and our local square. These are all places where a wagon will be great! We aren’t doing a lot of trail rides or things like that where a jogging stroller might be better.
There are pros and cons to double strollers and stroller wagons. And I’m not convinced either option will completely satisfy your every need or situation. So if you’re in the same boat as us, I’d encourage you to think through some of these same topics to figure out which baby vehicle might be right for your family. And then don’t stress any more about it because as I’ve told myself, if I’m wrong, I can always get the other one later.
