The past few weeks in PA have been COLD. I’m not talking about “wear a hat” cold, I mean the kind of cold that hurts your hands if you’re outside for more than 67 seconds. With it being frigid, we really haven’t been able to do much and have gotten pretty creative when it comes to keeping our 21 month old entertained. Here are some ways we’ve been passing time over the last few weeks when weather has kept us indoors 24/7.

  • Local Library- Our local library offers a free program once a week for toddlers. They sing songs, read a story, have bubble time and more. It’s something we look forward to every week especially in the winter as a way to get out of the house. Check out your local library page to see what is available to in your area! Your local YMCA may also offer some programs.
  • We have also been doing a lot of crafts, and nothing complicated. We’ve stocked up on craft supplies from our dollar store to keep it as budget friendly as possible. When we need something to do, we make a craft for grandma. Here is a great option to try out for Valentine’s day!
  • We’ve also been baking a lot of cookies. Toddlers can help with simple steps like stirring and will LOVE adding sprinkles to the tops.
  • Movie days. I’d be lying if I said we’ve kept it screen free. Every once in awhile we’ve have ourselves a lazy morning cuddled up on the couch watching a movie. At 21 months, Baby G won’t make it through a whole movie yet, but we enjoy it for a little!
  • We’ve also loaded up on crayons and coloring books from the dollar store and break them out during afternoons slumps!
  • Baths! Need to kill some time and keep your toddler entertained- just put them in the tub! I don’t always do a soap bath because I don’t want her skin to get too dry, but some water time is sure to keep Baby G entertained for a little.
  • Chores still need to get done in the winter and I’ll have Baby G help me out while I clean. She’ll grab her toy broom or sweeper and help me tidy up.
  • Take advantage of indoor play areas at restaurants or local malls. Our mall has a fabulous indoor play area for toddlers and it’s conveniently right next to Starbucks- double win!

A few options that are a little more expensive but totally worth it:

  • Pittsburgh has a great aviary that is indoors and offers bird feedings, educational shows and more. Check out cities near you to explore options like aviaries or aquariums.
  • Pittsburgh also has a great children’s museum. A children’s museum or science center is a great way to mix it up during the winter!
  • Lastly, we’ve signed up for weekly swim lessons. Swim lessons at swim schools in our area aren’t cheap but over the winter months it is a great way to get out the house and get Baby G some more active time. Your local YMCA may offer lessons if you don’t have a swim school nearby.
