I have always been a big fan of listening to podcasts. I love to listen to them while I walk or when I’m cleaning the house, or driving in the car. When my little one came along I continued this practice but as my oldest son started to get bigger and more engaged with what I was listening to I was delighted to discover that people make podcasts that are designed for kids. And not just older kids but even our littlest ones can find something made just for them. I’ve got 5 of our favorites below. Podcasts are great for when you’re in the car running errands, to enjoy together while eating lunch, for your little to listen to independently while you make dinner (even if its at your feet!), or to listen to as they’re waking up from nap and easing back into the day.
Super Truck: Stories for Kids
This is hands down my son’s favorite podcast. It features a “super truck” that can transform into all different kinds of trucks. With the help of his digital assistant, he rescues characters all around car city that are caught in various jams. The episodes are about 5 minutes each, perfect for a little one’s attention span and they have also added some extended episodes that group about 10-15 episodes together by theme.
Thomas and Friends Storytime
Are any of your little ones fans of Thomas the train? Well you can have it in podcast form! These are about 10 minute episodes that follow the adventures of Thomas and all of his train friends around Sodor. Even if your little isn’t familiar with the tv show, these would still be enjoyable and easy to follow.
Super Simple Imagination Time
Many of you are probably familiar with the Super Simple Songs channel on YouTube. This podcast takes many of these beloved songs and helps your child use their imagination to enjoy them. The host Caitie walks kids through using their imagination in various ways incorporating movement and songs all throughout the episode. These are a bit longer at about 20-25 minutes and the actual imagination portion could be trickier for younger toddlers to actually participate in since it’s a bit abstract for their little minds. But I’ve found it’s enjoyable either way. My littlest enjoys listening to the calming storytelling and music and my son is now able to play pretend right along with Caitie.
Digger Rex
Initially I thought this one might be a bit above my toddlers head since it’s a bit more “scientific”. But if you have a dinosaur lover in your home then don’t be worried about that at all. He loves it! Some of the facts may be more complicated than he can really understand but he enjoys hearing about the dinosaurs AND it incorporates construction too! The podcast is about an excavator that turns into a dinosaur (who can still use his excavator skills). He travels all over digging up dinosaur bones and teaching kids about the different types of dinosaurs. The episodes are only 7 minutes and all follow a very similar pattern that helps little ones follow along.
Annie’s Mini BFF
This podcast is made by Annie Downs who is an author and podcaster. I personally enjoy her podcast for adults so I was excited that she also has one for kids. It isn’t necessarily aimed at just toddlers but is suitable for a larger age range. It is set up in more of a storytime format. Annie, the host, shares a bible story with the kids using a children’s bible to make it accessible and then follows it up with a little activity prompt for them. I like to listen to this one with my son so we can talk about it as we listen and it opens up some great conversations!
