Do you have any sand castle molds laying around? If you do, grab them for this activity!

We found a fun way to use those molds all year long!

You don’t need much for the activity and if you do need to get anything you can find this all at Dollar Tree! All you need is water colors, water, sand castle molds and a paint brush.

First thing you’ll want to do is rinse them off to get any sand out. Then you fill them up with water and pop them in the freezer. Leave a little room at the top so it doesn’t expand too much and cause the mold to crack. That little piece of advice comes from experience!

I usually like to put them in the freezer overnight so I have them ready to go for the next day.

Once your ice castle molds are done you can lay them out on your preferred surface. It needs to be something that can get messy! We like to use a short bin to keep the water/paint all in one place. Get creative and use what works best for you and your little one!

After you’ve set up your ice castles it’s time to paint! Experiment with whatever paints you have at hand! We use acrylic paint that I watered down a bit so it wouldn’t become clumpy against the ice. It worked really well! Next time we will use watercolors to see the difference.

We took this opportunity to discuss how when certain colors mix they change into other colors! She picked a couple at a time and we would mix them over the ice to see what color it turned into. This activity was an absolute hit and I really love the fact that you can get plenty of use out of those sand castle molds!

Plus, watching the paint melt off is so fun!
