Music has power to make us feel things, and that is definitely true for parents. Have you ever heard song again after becoming a mom and it just hits different?

Below is a list of songs that will hit you right in the feels. Prepare your mama heart now, because these are guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings.

Motherhood in Song Form

Some of these songs have been used as baby shower themes or on Instagram baby announcements, and there’s a reason so many moms relate to them. Here’s what’s on our motherhood playlist:

  1. Better Place by Rachel Platten: This song is soft and slow, a perfect reminder that our kids can really make the world a better place for all.
  2. You’ll Be in My Heart by Phil Collins: This song is a Disney classic. If you haven’t seen the part of the Tarzan movie with Kala, the mother gorilla, taking care of baby Tarzan, you are missing out! Just make sure you have tissues.
  3. Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles: This is such a sweet song that exudes hope. The lullaby version by Christina Perri is particularly adorable!
  4. The Best Day by Taylor Swift: This song from the Fearless album is an anthem to moms. In it, Taylor sings about her relationship with her own mom and how she has been there for her throughout her life. Aww!
  5. Never Grow Up by Taylor Swift: This one is from the Speak Now album and was written by Taylor as if she were talking to herself at different times in her life. It serves as a reminder to all of us to not hurry the growing-up process. We’re all learning as we go along, and we should embrace the ups and downs without shame.
  6. Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland: This one has countless versions (including a popular ukulele version), and they all capture the hope we have for our kids and the hope they bring into our lives. It’s especially meaningful for those who have or are waiting for their rainbow babies (babies born after loss).
  7. You’ve Got a Friend in Me by Randy Newman: We all know this one, another Disney classic! You might think you’ll get tired of hearing this Toy Story theme, but it captures the fun and whimsy of childhood. Don’t we all want our kids to see us as their friend in some way, a person who will love and support them always?
  8. I Believe in You by Michael Buble: The music video implies that this song is more for partners, but so many of the lyrics could be said by parents to their kids. It’s a song about creating a life and a home that is full of love and support.
  9. Ready, Set, Don’t Go by Billy Ray Cyrus: This is a throwback for us millennial moms! Billy Ray Cyrus wrote this for his daughter, the now-famous Miley Cyrus, at the very beginning of her Hannah Montana career. It’s about letting kids grow up and wanting the best for them. The song is even better as a duet between Billy Ray and Miley.

Music Has Power

Motherhood is wonderful, exhausting, fulfilling, draining, thrilling, tough – and that’s just the top of the emotional iceberg. These songs, and many others, speak to mama hearts in deep and true ways. Famous fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen once said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” There is so much truth in that.

Consider making yourself a playlist of songs that help you feel seen and understood as a mom. It can be a fun, maybe even cathartic, experience!
