In the early weeks of your baby’s life, it may seem like all they want is their mom. But as a new dad, you need to be able to bond with your baby as well. If you aren’t sure where to start we’ve compiled a short list of ways for you to bond with your baby so you aren’t feeling left out of all the baby time and snuggles.

1. Take on diaper duty

Although this may not be the most glamorous way to bond with your baby it is an important task. Babies go through LOTS of diapers in the first few weeks of their lives and mom is still recovering from birth so having to get up and change a diaper many times throughout the day and night can be hard on her. Taking over diaper duty is not only a big help for mom but also a time for you to spend just you and baby.

2. Burp baby

If your baby isn’t taking a bottle it is hard for you as the dad to feed, so burping your baby after they have eaten is the next best thing, right? It’s a great way to help and bond with the baby and get some snuggles while you’re at it!

3. Give baby a bath

Babies don’t need a ton of baths early on, but when they do this is something that as a dad you can do to not only bond with your baby but give mom a break for a few minutes.

4. Take care of mom

Filling up mom’s drink or making food for the family can go a long way. Making meals and making sure that everyone is taken care of is arguably the most important task of all! Everything is centered around the baby and mom isn’t thinking about what she’s going to eat so taking on that task is the best way to take care of not only mom but baby as well.

Bonus points: Make sure all of the dishes including bottle and pump parts are cleaned so mom doesn’t have to worry about those!

5. Take the baby along during your day

Maybe you enjoy cooking, taking walks after dinner, or watching sports. Why not take the baby along? If you are into watching sports you can hold your baby while you watch your favorite team. If you enjoy the outdoors, put the baby in a stroller or carrier and take them along. Spending quality time doing things you enjoy is one of the best ways for you to spend one on one time together!

This may go without saying but take the time to just sit and hold your baby. Whether it is during the day to give mom a break to eat or take a shower, but also at night so that mom can get some sleep too.

Hopefully, this list is helpful for all the new dads out there who want to bond with their baby but aren’t sure how. If you’re a mom reading this, share this list with dad so they don’t feel left out when it comes to spending quality time with your new baby!
