Congratulations, new mama! Whether this is your first baby or your fourth baby, you STILL might find yourself asking, “What do I even need for this baby?” Unless you’re having babies close together, even a two year gap might mean that you got rid of a lot of baby gear or that the things you had the first time around are outdated or no longer work. Or, maybe you just want to make sure you’re not missing out on a new baby product that could make postpartum and infancy that much easier.

Whatever your situation is, if you find yourself asking what you need, you’re in the right spot! Here are 10 very basic baby products that you might want to consider adding to your registry.

Keep in mine that “Must Have” is just a cute headline. All you really need for a baby is a way to feed them, a comfortable way for them to sleep, some diapers and clothes. But most of us like some modern conveniences that can make motherhood easier if even if they aren’t necessary.

1. A Diaper Bag with Multiple Compartments:

A well-organized diaper bag is a lifesaver. Look for one with plenty of compartments, insulated pockets, and a changing pad. Bonus points if it is cute and makes you feel like a put together mama!

2. Convertible Car Seat:

If you plan to leave the house with your baby ever at all, you need a carseat. Some opt for a baby bucket that can be carried inside or moved from one vehicle to the next. But keep in mind that most infant carseats have a low threshold for height and weight. Your baby will outgrow it in a few months and you’ll need to buy a new seat. Consider a convertible seat that goes from infancy into childhood.

3. Baby Carrier or Wrap:

This might seem like something you’re not into, but once you realize how much baby likes to be close to you to sleep, a wrap or carrier will give you hands-free contact nap options! If baby is sick, a carrier or wrap can be worn for extra skin-to-skin snuggles. Pacing the house late at night is so much easier with a baby in a carrier than in your arms.

4. Breast Pump and Nursing Accessories:

If you plan to be home with baby 24/7 and exclusively breastfeed, you may feel like a pump is not necessary. But consider if you ever intend to use a baby sitter, have dad stay home with the baby even for a few hours, or what you’ll do if you are uncomfortable while Baby’s sleep lengthens out. Even a simple hand pump or silicone pump can be useful in a pinch! Don’t forget nursing pads, nipple cream, and a comfortable nursing bra.

5. Sleep Sack or Swaddle Blankets:

While swaddling is not always necessary and many families opt out of it all together, it can work wonders for a fussy baby. You can find many different styles of swaddles or use a simple blanket. A sleep sack is a wonderful option for babies in a colder climate to keep them cozy and safe. Find what your baby likes and what makes your nights a little more restful

6. Stroller with Reclining Option:

A stroller that reclines is essential for on-the-go naps and for infants who can’t sit up yet. Look for one that is light weight and folds easily. Consider going to a store and pushing around floor models so you can see how easy they are to “drive.”

7. Baby Monitor with Video Capability:

A baby monitor might seem like a new age tool that is unnecessary, but having eyes on your baby while you shower or step outside can offer a lot of peace of mind! If you plan to have baby sleep or play in a separate space from you, a video monitor is helpful. Consider the size of your house and your internet situation to decide if you want a WiFi capable unit or a more simple one.

8. Baby Bath Tub and Essentials:

Bath time is a special bonding moment for parents and Baby. While a sink or tub can be just fine for Baby’s bath, having a small table top bath tub can be more convenient and comfortable than leaning over tub or hold baby in a hard sink. Tiny and soft wash clothes, a gentle baby soap, and some sweet toys are also great things to have!

9. Soft, Cotton Onesies and Sleepers:

A true must-have are zipper sleepers! You might think that you need cute floofy outfits for your baby with matching head accessories, and while these are great for cute photo ops, you and your baby will spend many early days in very little clothing or in your pjs. Stock up on a soft and convenient sleepers and onesies for baby. Skip the frills and the layers and go for comfort!

10. High-Quality Diapers and Wipes:

If you choose to use cloth diapers, make sure you have enough on hand to accommodate your laundry schedule. 25-30 diapers is usually enough though baby will use a lot in the early days! If you use paper diapers, get a variety of sizes and consider if you can trade is sizes as your baby outgrows them. And don’t forget the wipes! They are not just for poopy diapers. They will be for sticky faces, dirty hands, dropped pacifiers, spit up messes, and can even give mom a quick underarm refresh in a pinch. Stock up on some natural and toxin free wipes.

While you don’t have to let consumerism and the newest baby gadget take over your life, investing in some high-quality baby products can make the transition into motherhood smoother and more enjoyable. Every baby is different and will prefer different things. Don’t be afraid to pivot, try something else, or go off script whenever you and Baby feel like it’s time. There is no wrong way to love and raise your baby.
