Warm weather means getting the kids outside, and being outside means getting messy! Letting your kids exercise their artistic prowess is a great way to keep their minds active and engaged, especially when they’re making their craft for a loved one! These special flower pots are a great gift and a fun decoration to keep around the house!

What You’ll Need:

  • Patience
  • Disposable Table Cloth or Outdoor Table
  • Smock or old t-shirt (optional)
  • Baby/Wet Wipes
  • Clay Pot
  • Paint Brushes
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Garden Soil (optional)
  • Small Flower or seeds (optional)

Start by setting your expectations for crafting! Keep in mind that not everything will go perfectly and remember it’s important to let your child(ren) have fun and get creative, even if that means getting messy!

Anticipating the mess, start by covering your work area with a disposable table cloth or use an outdoor table that you don’t mind getting a bit messy. Also it might even be a good idea to throw some smocks or old t-shirt’s over your child(ren) before the fun begins.

Have each child first wipe off their clay pot to prepare it for the paint. While my girls were doing this, I shared that we were going to make these for their Gigi and Nana.

Next let them select a brush, pick paint colors, and ultimately start painting. We kept it simple with just three colors that my girls could then mix if they wanted to make even more color options. While your child(ren) are painting, I always think it’s fun to ask questions about what they are painting, the designs they are choosing, and what they are painting for each special recipient.

When painting is complete, simply allow the beautiful flower pot creations to dry in a well ventilated area.

Finally, you can help your child(ren) fill the flower pots with soil and a beautiful flower or keep crafting and make some beautiful flowering hands described below.

Flowering Hands

What You’ll Need:

  • Patience 🙂
  • Your Child’s Hand
  • Pencil
  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Scotch tape
  • Kebab Skewer or Straw to make the stem

First, have your child select their favorite or the recipient’s favorite color of construction paper.

Next, ask your child to place their hand down on the paper for tracing with the pencil. When doing this for my girls, I asked them to pretend to be a statue while I was tracing, which was a fun little game and helped them hold still.

Then depending on your child’s age, have them begin cutting out the hand or help them cut it out.

Next use the scotch tape to adhere the adorable hand flower to the kebab stick and/or straw. You can also cut out a leaf or two from green paper to add to the stem.

Finally, place them within the flower pot either as an addition to the potted flower or by itself.

Anyone receiving these will cherish them for years to come!!

Pro Tip: Mom’s if your reading about these crafts and need a break then simply share this with your Husband or Partner for them to do with the child(ren) while you run out to get a much needed break whether that be a pedicure or a solo Target trip 🙂
